Fairmont State University is a public university located in Fairmont, also known as `The Friendly City`, which is a city in the US state of West Virginia, serving as the county seat of Marion County, with a population of more than 19 000 inhabitants, estimated during the 2000 census.
Fairmont State was established in 1865, and over the time, was known variously, as Fairmont Normal School, the Fairmont Branch of the West Virginia Normal School, the Branch of the West Virginia Normal School at Fairmont, and more commonly, as Fairmont State Normal School, in April, 2004, Governor Bob Wise signing legislation, and changing its name to Fairmont State University.
Fairmont State's sports teams are known as the Fighting Falcons and Lady Falcons, and they compete in NCAA Division II, in WVIAC. Their distinctive colors are maroon and white.
